Little splurges are the killers

Americans talk a good game about saving and paying off debt, but they sabotage their efforts by splurging on meals out and other little luxuries, a survey says.

While Americans are finding it harder and harder to afford big purchases such as homes and cars, a new survey of household spending and savings indicates that it's not the big-ticket items that get many consumers in trouble.
Instead, it's the little things that consumers concede they splurge on that often prevent families from reaching their savings goals. Surprisingly, the biggest culprit isn't frequent trips to the mall, according to the survey, released last week by the Pew Research Center. Many consumers say dining out at restaurants is the thing they "splurge on most."
What's more, consumers have drastically expanded the list of things they deem to be necessities of life. For instance, 68% of adults now believe that a microwave oven is an absolute necessity, up from just 32% a decade ago. Fifty-nine percent say they absolutely must have an air conditioner in their cars, up from 41% who thought so in 1996. Roughly half of all respondents say that a home computer and a cell phone are needed to function in day-to-day life.

Yet when surveyed about their own savings goals, the vast majority of Americans described themselves as thrifty. The Pew survey, based on telephone interviews conducted nationwide this fall, said 77% of adults describe themselves as "the kind of person who always looks for ways to save money." Meanwhile, 67% said they are the kind of people who are "always aware" of how much they're spending, and 88% said they closely watch how much they spend. When pressed on the issues, though, 63% of respondents conceded they "should be saving more."

This seemed to confirm the findings of a separate survey released last week by GfK Roper Consulting. That survey found that around 21% of Americans feel that their single most important financial goal this year is "just keeping up with the bills." Another 21% said their biggest task is to pay down debt. Meanwhile, other laudable goals, such as saving for retirement, putting kids through college and purchasing a home, ranked much farther down the list.

Air Show Photos

This is just a part of the crowd.

People are in line to buy food.

See the position of the two aircraft at the middle?

Pilots rolled the aircraft again. Woot! woot!

He waved back to us...

And yours truly after the event. Hope you enjoy the pics. ^_^

A very tiring day...

For today's event, hubby and I were late. I said in my previous post that we sleep late lastnight and so we overslept. We woke up at 10:30 AM and the Air show starts at 12:00 noon so it's okay, we still have time. Last night I already put my sunblock lotion and hat on the dining table so I won't forget it. According to the official website for today's event that we can't bring foods, drinks and tent but we can bring chairs, cameras and umbrella. Hubby and I just had a little snack. We finally got out of the house at 12:05 PM. There were only two lanes for spectators so passengers who had flights today won't be disturbed. Oh boy, the line was soooooo looooong and it's like stop and go. Normally, it's only 25 minutes going to the Airport but hubby and I reach the parking lot at 2:15 PM. We were on the road for 2 hrs and 10 minutes! Unbelievable! I was bored already so I decided to look at other cars plate numbers of where they from, took a picture of the clouds, cars and the air show. And guess what? There were plate numbers from 10 States! They are from Tennessee, California, North Carolina, Florida (the Sunshine State), Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and of course from Alabama. I was amazed of how far these guys drive just to be here. I mean, maybe not for the show because maybe they have relatives here that they visit but the miles that they drive is so far away.

I enjoyed watching the Air Show today. It's so touching how these pilots made the aircraft roll and form shapes out in the sky without getting dizzy inside. And they're doing it for more than an hour! My gracious goodness! Can you imagine that?

It's hot today and hubby was feeling dehydrated so we bought something to drink and munch. The Show finish at 4:30 PM and we walked a long way before we reach our car. I almost want to lie down on the grass coz I'm so tired walking but I also want to go to the Filipino Store. Going out at the Airport was faster than going in which made me happy coz we still have time to shop at the Filipino store. I had a little chit chat with the parents of the Filipina owner then after that hubby and I went to Subway for dinner. Hubby said he's very hungry and wants to eat right away or else he won't be able to drive anymore. Toink! We felt better after eating and headed home right away. At last, we arrive home at 7:15 PM.

Here I am again...

Here I am still awake and hubby too. Last night I went to bed late because I have opps that I want to finish right away. Hubby slept early because our Dentist told him to go to the Oral Surgeon's Office early. His appointment was yesterday morning which is Friday. Our Dentist also suggest that hubby has to take the antibiotic pills during dinner, before bed time, midnight, dawn and before going to the Oral Surgeon. At 3:00 AM yesterday, hubby woke up and he thought that maybe it's because of the pill. I woke up at 4:00 AM but wasn't able to go back to sleep until I think 5:00 AM. I remember that I have to record Tyra's show today so get up and program the recorder so I can watch Tyra later. I went back to bed and suddenly I thought of cooking fish stew and fry some fish. I get up again and thaw the fish and veggies that I need for dinner. So this morning I'm tired and not in the mood to go out. I almost hit the curb when we went to the Pharmacy store because I thought that the entrance is on the next block but then it's the one in front of me. Good thing that I was able to step on the break so hard or else I hit the curb. Then I remember that hubby told me before that it's better to hit the curb than hitting another car. So after the incident, I just laugh. haha I guess accidents happen when you don't have enough sleep. I tried to plan to sleep early but here I am again, still doing something in front of the computer at 1:23 AM. Then tomorrow we need to get up early because hubby and I planned to watch the Air Show at the Airport. I don't know if we can make it though but we'll see. We are still determined to watch the Air Show tomorrow. Happy weekend to All!!! ^_^

A guide on Bed Bugs

Bedbugsguide.com is a website that will help you understand more about bed bugs. I’ve seen Rachael Ray’s show about the bed bugs where the Doctor shows a video of the bed bugs but the information given is not very detailed. If you can see this tiny creature as what I saw in the video then you’ll be disgusted by it. I really never thought that beds can have bugs too. But now that you know and heard about it, then it’s time for you to educate yourself and learn more about it so if you encounter this problem at home, you already know how to deal with it. Bedbugsguide.com is a very good tool on how to spot bed bug signs. In this website you will learn everything that you need to know about bed bugs and how to get rid of them. The bed bugs guide website can help you save your mattress so you don’t have to purchase an expensive new one.

Today...

It's my day off again but I had an appointment at 3:00 PM today with my Dentist. I woke up a little early thinking that I can do some chores but was stuck by blog hopping. Anyways, my dental appointment today is to have a temporary crown for my implant and will be back for the permanent crown. Hubby was having some problems with his left jaw coz there's something growing in there like a golf ball. I thought it's something like what I had which is just like a bean shape but his is different. Our family doctor prescribed him with antibiotic but he want to hear another opinion from the Dentist so he ask for an appointment also while I'm there. The Dentist checked on him first before they start working on me and I was surprise that his problem is worst than mine. The Dentist suggests that hubby will go to an Oral Surgeon tomorrow and see of what the Oral Surgeon can do. The problem is his wisdom tooth was infected and it needs to be removed before it gets worst coz according to the Dentist's assistant it might infect the nerves too. But hubby wants my tooth implant to be completely healed first. So when they're done with me, the Dentist told me that he want to show me something while checking on hubby's jaw. He told hubby that I'm his (Dentist) eyes just in case the golf ball like in hubby's jaw will become bigger. He said that hubby is safe if that golf ball like thing will become soft. But before that, while the Dentist and his Assistant were working on me, the cap of my implant won't come out when it's time for the cap to be removed. Funny huh coz that cap fell accidentally twice and it happened when I was sick. The Dentist kinda gave up because the cap stuck to the implant. He said it's the first time that it happen. Whoa! But last week when he checked on my implant, he said its fantastic and it's like a hard rock. Too fantastic that it doesn't wanna come out anymore. haha And because he's kinda tired of pulling the implant's cap, he asked for an X-Ray and when he saw the result, he said that it's just normal. Then he tried pulling it again. At that time I was praying God's help coz I don't want to make it hard for them to work over time because of me. Imagine, I'm the only patient left in the clinic and they're supposed to go home at 5:00 PM. A few seconds after my little prayer my Dentist said "Victory!" That was a success and for me it's a Miracle that God listen to my prayer at that very moment. Hubby and I left the Dentist clinic at 5:22 PM. After that hubby showed me the road in going to the Oral Surgeon's Office coz I'll be the one to drive tomorrow for his appointment. We then went to the Asian Market for hubby's vegetables and for my junk foods then headed to the Chinese Buffet coz we were so hungry. Did you know what I put on my plate? As usual, SEAFOODS! Hubby tease me that I over indulge with seafoods coz I don't have room for my fortune cookie anymore. haha

Fresh Peanuts

I miss eating fresh peanuts so when I see this bag of peanuts at the Asian Market, I bought it. This is good when you eat it fresh, boil it with salt or fry it. These are the peanuts that I fry. Hmmm Maybe I'll try cooking them in the microwave someday if the Asian Market will sell fresh peanuts again. :)

I didn’t know that there are individuals who have the same name and family name like mine and the only difference is the middle name. Cute! I even saw their pictures there too. Awesome!

Hells Kitchen Game

Have you seen the Hells Kitchen on TV? Well, hubby and I watch it but not always coz we forgot what channel and time this show be played. Now we realized it's every Tuesday. I started to love watching it and think how hard it is to be a chef. Not easy huh! I guess it's hard for the contestants to work in the kitchen specially when Chef Ramsay yells at them and tells them his signature word "idiot". Now I'm downloading the game coz I wanna try playing with it. Hmm I hope the game can help me do my job in the kitchen when I'm cooking. haha And if you're interested to play with it too then click here.

Bloggers and Blogging...

Again, I sleep late at night though I tried to sleep early. It seems that sleeping late becomes a habit. Maybe some if not all of you have the same kind of problem but I think that's what bloggers are experiencing. There are times that my blog is the one controlling me and now I want to be in control again. I know that it's my fault if I let my blog run my life coz that's not how it is supposed to be. Maybe I just need to re-program my mind of which one is important and what should I prioritize. I miss my kitchen and I want to do some more cooking. Then I want to start reading the magazines and books that I bought but haven't opened yet because of blogging. And one more thing on the list is to be healthy so I plan to try exercising at the Fitness Center again. Don't know though when to start and how to divide my time for all these plans.

As you can see, blogging really takes a lot of time. Aside from updating your blog everyday you also have to blog hop. But blog hopping takes a lot of time too because if you like the title of other bloggers post then you'll be stuck in their page reading the whole story and more story that catches your attention. That's what I do so I ended up sleeping late. I can't imagine how other bloggers made it if they have more than two blogs. They might have a secret of how they blog hop and update all their blogs. That's kinda hard. But one thing I noticed is that most of them don't visit my blog right away for days, weeks and some months. I guess they don't really have that much time to visit other blogs anymore. (Just a thought) Now I'm enjoying having time for myself and hubby before blogging. It feels so good when you're in control of your life again and won't be crazy about blog hopping or blogging. The next thing on the list is cleaning my blog links.

Mango Shake

We had the honey mango that I bought at the Asian Market just like the sweet mango in the Philippines so hubby and I decided to make this mango shake with our new toy and the result was good. It's just that after drinking the shake, I was shaking also because the air conditioner is ON so I'm cold afterwards. haha The is good when it's hot outside. :)

When parents are busy...

I don't have kids yet but my friends here have kids. We sometimes have a gathering so I meet their kids and observed how they act while the parents are busy. These photos were taken during one of our gathering at my friend's house. Amy was making lumpia and I was the in-charge of the food processor for chopping the veggies and shrimp. My friend's little ones were busy doing something else also while the mom was busy socializing. I'm observing the kids of what they do while the parents are busy doing something else and I found these cute so I took a picture of them. This little boy is my God-son who enjoyed playing the stuff in the kitchen. I guess this little strainer is a good replacement for his teether. hehe

This little girl was throwing stuff into the garbage. I don't know what she was thinking, maybe she's trying to help in cleaning the area so she has more room to run around. haha

My Best Friends Wedding Plan

We are the best of friends since we were in College and even now that we are far away from each other, we are still communicating each other. She'll soon be tying the knot next year in Lebanon and she wants me to be her maid of honor. Knowing the place and the distance that I need to travel to be there on her wedding day is tough. I'm now married and I have to consider my husband's opinion of going into a place where there's war going on. Hubby and I talked about it seriously and decided that I can't attend her wedding in Lebanon. Though I wanted to be there on her big day but I also have to think of my safety. I might not be able to go there but our friendship is still the same. Now she plans to come and visit me. I hope she'll get her US Visa soon so we can see each other again.

Home made salted peanut

I saw the fresh raw peanut at the Asian Market last Saturday and decided to buy one plastic bag though I don't know what to do with it yet. I was eating it raw and confused if I'll boil it with salt or fry it. Then I decuded to just try frying it coz I remember when I was in the Philippines that I used to buy this at the sidewalk after school or at night when there are events going on in town. Here are the photos of the fried peanuts.

I cooked this last night. Hubby liked it. ^_^

Almost done. *_*

My snack for today. It's really yummy that I don't want to stop munching it. -_^

Can I see your ID?

Hubby and I went to Olive Garden restaurant coz I miss their salad and garlic bread. hehe I love their chicken marsala but this time I tried ordering the mixed grill which is also good. But before the waiter serve the salad, he ask hubby if he wants to have a sample of their wine. Hubby agreed to try the wine but just a little bit then I said I want to try a little bit too. The waiter said something which I didn't hear clearly so I asked what he said again and he asked me this "Can I see your ID"? Hubby laugh and said, "she's already 31". I was laughing also coz that was the first time that somebody asked for my ID. I showed him my driver license and I think he checked my birth date before he pour the wine into my glass. Yes, they are that strict here in US. Hubby asked the waiter if he thinks that I'm 16 and he said "not 16 but a little over 16". And that's because here in US you are allowed to drink if you're 21 yrs. old unlike in the Philippines where teenagers or even kids can drink wine or beer with their parents consent. But here, the answer would be not only No but "Hell, No!" haha It was a funny experience. ^_^

I had a fist fight!

the fist part to the stick man fight series

That's what happens in my dream. I had a fist fight with a bad boy and some guys who wants to grab my bag. The setting was again in the Philippines as if it's real. In my dream I was there walking around and suddenly this bad boy grabbed my bag. I was still holding the bag and fight with the boy. It was a long fight coz the boy was determined to steal my bag. Then there were teenagers whom I thought were his friends who sort of cheering him up. I then notice that my bag is not in my hand anymore when my co-worker here in US handed me a telescope and said "Look!" pointing into the direction where the boy is. It was kinda blurry when I first look at the telescope then I saw the boy sitting on top of the sand that forms like a little mountain. He was laughing while watching a woman buried in the sand but the head shows as if she was sleeping. I think he was laughing watching the buried woman in the sand because he formed like a boobs also where the woman's boobs are. Then I saw my bag next to the feet of the woman. Then somebody handed me some big plastic bags that has something inside but it was lightweight as if the inside were plastic bags also. I said that I can't fight if my hands are full of plastic bags so I handed the plastic bags to a friend. When I went out in the place where I fight the boy, I saw a guy sitting on top of the sand that forms a little mountain also next to the door. He was laughing while watching what this boy did. I then know that he's part of the group who grabbed my bag so I went to him and sort of hug him but I put my two hands in his mouth as if I am tearing it and I said to him "Why are you doing this to me?” In my dream, I know the guy but his face in my dream is different. I just know that he's somebody I know. Then I woke up. I told hubby about it and hubby told me something. He said that maybe this person I know wants to steal what is mine. I found a book "Dictionary of dreams" so I look for the meaning about the stealing. It was written there that it's possible that I feel cheated or not respected and the other meaning is the loss of property, whether possessions or loved ones. As of now, I haven't heard about bad news from Philippines yet which I hope won't happen.

A place called Paradise

I love this place. It looks very relaxing and full of God's creation. I wish I can have a house that has a sorrounding like this. Maybe put some fish in the pond so I can go fishing sometimes. haha What a dream! I need a genie to get this place. haha

My breakfast

Cookies, wafers and crackers are my breakfast lately. It's easy for me to just grab a couple of each of them then I drink a glass of milk or soda and that's it. Eating rice for breakfast needs a lot of time and I normally wake up late now because of blogging. Oh well, I think that's the reason why I'm skinny. :)

My father is a strict person especially to us his kids. He doesn't want us to go to the beach with our neighbors even if it's just a walking distance from where we live maybe because he's afraid that we'll drown. We can only go to the beach with him and for me those days were special. He was a strict father but then I realized why he's like that. He has a lot of dreams for his kids that he want us to always be safe. My father died 5 days after my 8th birthday but the good memories I had with him will always be in my heart.

I'm sharing this tag to my friends listed in my blog roll who don't have this tag yet. Feel free to share pictures of your dads and pay tribute to them on their special day.

Who's in the kitchen?

That's hubby, making some corn bread. He likes corn bread but I don't. hehe So he tried making some and after it's cooked, we let it cool down a little bit then we eat it when it's just warm but not hot. I notice that corn bread is good when it's freshly baked plus the smell is so inviting. The kitchen really smells yummy!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

My friends Pinaymama and Weng tagged me this with a cause. Thanks Joy and Weng for passing this to me. It's a great opportunity for me to help an organization like this even thru this blog of mine.

• The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman's mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present.

• Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, delaying pregnancy until after age 30 or never becoming pregnant, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.

• Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival.

• Ninety-six percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years.

• Over eighty percent of breast lumps are not cancerous, but benign such as fibrocystic breast disease.

• You are never too young to develop breast cancer! Breast Self-Exam should begin by the age of twenty.Resources: American Cancer Society National Cancer Institute Komen FoundationYou can help the lives of many women by spreading the word aboutThe Breast Cancer Site pink button as many times as you can. Picnic at the Park

Today is my day off so I was thinking to have a picnic with my friends at the Park. I was kinda hesitant to have a picnic because when I check the weather yesterday it says that there will be an isolated thunderstorm today. But this morning, it seems that the sun is out and no thunderstorm going on so my friends and I plan to have the picnic and will just eat our lunch at the Park. For my friends Amy and Jane, it was their first time of going to this park. I've been there many times and love the place that I even go there by myself if I'm bored. The place is really relaxing and good for exercising. Anyway, I went to the store to buy 2 loaves of bread for the fish at the Park and a spray for mosquito with sunscreen in it coz I thought that mosquitos are everywhere and might want to have a bite of me. haha Thank God there's no mosquito there. Though it was so hot but the wind blows every now and then. We had fun staying there and we are looking forward for the next picnic. Here are the photos I took at the park today. :)

Just relaxing...

Looking at the sorroundings while relaxing...

Having fun feeding the fish, ducks and geese.

I'm drowning!

Again I had a dream that I was in the Philippines. There was a strong typhoon which made the place flooding. I saw the fish and dog in the water. When I went outside the house to get something, the other plastic bag that I was holding fell into the water. I tried to get the plastic bag but to my surprise, the flood was getting bigger and the current of the water is like a river. I was shocked to see how it happen coz I was just a few steps away outside the house and that's what I see already. I saw the plastic bag was pulled downward from the strong current of water and so I decided to just let it go. The water pushes me to where the bag goes but there was a guy who holds my hand and helps me to go back into the safe place. I don't know who he is. I was too busy wondering of what happen around so I just glance at him and said "Thank you". A neighbor asked me of where her house is and when I looked at the place where her house was located, there's no house there anymore. I asked if somebody's inside in her house and she said that her mother is not there but her father was inside because he's sick and can't walk. She just prayed that her father was okay in a place where the storm brought him. There was a guy that a friend of mine and me rescued from the river. Then I looked around and saw the ship floating on the air and about to fell into the water. I saw a lot of passengers in the ship and some jump out when the ship almost reach the water. I scream that there was a ship full of passengers that fell into the water. I asked somebody to go with me to help those passengers so I went to the water with 2 friends. We were using a big tube (salbabida/tire in bisaya) to get those passengers. We found some who were holding a raft and they transferred to our tube. I fell into the water when the guys we rescued transferred to the tube. As I was in the water, I saw two dead guys floating beside me. I tried to hold the tube and lift my body so I can go back to the tube again but a heavy arm is pushing me down back into the water. I pushed the arm away from me and I was kicking hard to get some air. When I finally back into the tube, I noticed that it was not the arm of the dead person beside me but a leg of the guy that my friend and I rescued. When we saw a big stone, we take a rest and so I had the chance to ask the guy why he tried to drown me. I told him that if it's not because of me, he might be dead because I am the one who told me friend to rescue him. He didn't say a word so I ask him again and again. He said that he wants to talk to my friend but I can't wait for his answer. I told him that I want to know the reason why he's doing it to me but he doesn't want to tell me. His long black hair covered his face so what I did was I put his hair near his ears so I can see his eyes then I push his eyes as hard as I could because of my anger. Then I woke up.

Pinay's cook out and bring house

These are my lady friends who loves to cook and eat Pinoy foods. In times like this, it's Jane who really cooked a lot as in a Looooot! haha She's a good cook when it comes to Pinoy foods so if one of us miss eating our foods in Pinas, one starts to call each of us and spread the word about the little gathering so we can think of what to cook. hehe They normally ask of when is my day off but last week, I receive a message in my cbox from Ilocana that there's a cook out at Jane's house the next day. She sent me the message the night before the gathering and I don't have a day off on that day. In short, no time to cook or bring something when I go there. Anyways, I receive a call again early in the morning about it and another one while I was at work. I went to Jane's house after work not bringing anything but myself. nyahahaha And guess what's in there! A lot of Pinoy foods again!

See what's on the table?

Lechon in the oven. hehe Mang Tomas sauce is good for this one.

Fried Milkfish and Galunggong with head and tails still intact for us to nible. haha

Sliced hot and spicy chorizo and fried dried fish. Very delish when you eat this using your hands. nyahaha

Pinakbet for good health. Yum yum!

The kutsinta/kuchinta topped with ground coconut. Parang galing Pinas din, ang tsalap! hahaha

And the puto, bow!

Oh di ba, feeling nasa Pinas rin kami pag sama-sama kaming ito ang kinain. After eating, we do belot belot... este... balot balot pala. haha So for me who eats like a cat, I have 1 week supply of pinoy foods in the fridge that I can heat in the microwave when I want to eat. I save time, money and effort in cooking. I only cook hubby's meals for the week coz my food is ready to eat na. Yan ang lutong bahay ng mga Pinay sa US. Kahit nasa malayo, pero malapit rin. hahaha
